Laser cutting can be used across all creative industries. Our machines can cut, engrave / raster and line etch a range of materials. Whether you are immersed in architecture, product design, fashion design, graphic design or just want to get creative; laser cutting is a great way to prototype, model, personalise, or manufacture a final product; from one piece to large volume runs.

Our studio is an approachable creative space with a relaxed atmosphere and a small team dedicated to personalised service. We are focused on providing fast efficient laser cutting services across the board, whether you are a student with a university project, an individual working on a personal project or a professional who requires cutting at commercial scale.

We believe in transparent pricing, no hidden costs or vague estimates. Check out our price list to get an idea of pricing for your project, we can assure you that our prices are competitive and we're happy to quote for specific jobs.

• We can cut, engrave and line etch on paper, cardboard, corrugated cardboard, acrylic perspex, PET, MDF, LDF, interior plywood, solid wood, pine, veneers, balsa wood, fabric, leather, foam board and corflute and more.

• Laser cutting is good for making architectural models, product prototypes, jewellery, moulds, fabric patterns for garments, signs, hobby models, invites and cake toppers, business cards, paper craft, gifts, stencils, final products, packaging etc.

• We have two large laser cutting machines on our premise both with 130W power capabilities. Large machine: 1200 x 880mm. Small machine: 900 x 580mm.

• We can cut materials at a range of different thicknesses.

• Our quick service usually means a same day turn around.

Whether you are a student, individual or commercial entity we are confident that our prices per hour are the most competitive in Auckland. Our price per hour does not mean that you have to cut for an hour to receive this rate, we will charge you only for the time of your specific job.

- An illustrator file of your design or an image of your design
- Dimensions of the design
- Intended Material type and thickness
- Please let us know if you intend to provide materials or if you would like us to source material for you.

Laser cutting for students

Our two 130W power laser cutters are more than double the size and power of most local university laser cutters in Auckland. This gives us the ability to cut materials faster, thicker materials and larger sheet sizes, which in the end means that you save more on our cheaper price.

As recent graduates we understand the demanding nature of creative study and have developed our services accordingly. During crit weeks we generally extend our hours and when necessary we're open for 24h services to keep wait times to a minimum.

Differentiating between student, individual and commercial jobs is at the discretion of the make shop team. If you would like a quote for a specific job please contact us.

We are confident that our student price per hour is the most competitive in Auckland. Our price per hour does not mean that you have to cut for an hour to receive this rate, we will charge you only for the time of your specific job.

24HR sERVICE FAQ

Extended hours and 24hr service

Extended hours and 24 hour laser cutting and large format printing services are only available to students at specific times of the year (during hand-ins / crits / presentations). Please see our website footer, Twitter or Facebook page for updates. After hours pricing is applicable Mon - Fri 5pm - 9:30am, Saturday 12pm - 9:30am and Sunday. Normal pricing applies during our usual hours. No pick ups or drop offs between 12:00am - 4:00am, so please email your laser cut files or print files within these times rather than bring them in physically

What does 24 hours mean?
24 hours literally means that we are open for laser cutting and large format printing for 24 hours. No pick ups or drop offs between 12:00am - 4:00am, so please email your laser cut files or print files within these times rather than bring them in physically.

What does extended hours mean?
Extended hours means that we open late past our usual hours, usually to around 9pm. See our website footer, twitter or facebook page for more detailed hours during crit weeks.

How long are you open 24 hours?
Our 24hr period lasts anywhere between a weekend to over a week, it really depends on the demand and number of people in the queue and how spread hand-in's / crit's are between year groups and universities.

How long are the queue's during 24 Hours?
We generally have same day / next day turn around time during 24 hour times. At times It may be to your advantage to arrange your laser cutting file / material sizes according to our small machine size to cut down the turn around time.

What is your after hours pricing? 
Students*        $45.00 p/h

Do you also provide large format printing during 24hrs?
Yes. We provide large format printing services at great prices also, if you would like more information click here to head to our printing info.

What if my job is not urgent or I don't want to pay after hours prices?
When you drop off your material / file please specify that you would like your job done during our normal hours. After hours jobs will be cut throughout the day and the night while normal hours jobs will be cut during the day throughout our standard store hours.

What is the bed sizes of your machines?

Large Machine: 1200mm x 880mm

Can I make a booking?
We do not take bookings, however we allow you to reserve your space in the queue. To do this you will need to either; bring in your materials (and email your file later) or email your file (and bring in your materials later). We do not take bookings with just your name and the time you want to come in.

Can I jump the queue?
We do not allow queue jumping. The effect of queue jumping is accumulative and would void the accuracy of everyones ETA / finishing time, so please do not ask to jump the queue. We will attempt to get your jobs done before your deadline but be aware there are wait times during busy periods so bring in your materials or email your file early to reserve your space in the queue.

Conditions of student pricing
Differentiating between student, individual and commercial jobs is at the discretion of the workshop team. If you would like a quote for a specific job please contact us. 

Students must provide a valid student ID to receive the student price.
We reserve the right to deem your student ID void and charge you individual or commercial rates if we believe that you are no longer a student or what your cutting is for a commercial purpose.

FAQ

How do I set up my files for cutting?
Please see our laser cutting file set up guide for full instructions on how to set up your file, or download the file set up guide.

Can you set up files for me?
Yes we can set up file for you, we charge $80 p/h for file set up. Please contact us for a quote on your job.

What is your usual turn around time?
We generally have a same day to next day turn around except during busy periods when our turn around time can extend to 1 - 2 days. At this time we usually have extended hours to keep wait times to a minimum.

What file types do you accept?
Illustrator, PDF, DWG 2013, DXF 2103.

Do you supply materials?
Our online store is coming soon. We will soon stock a range of materials for purchase. We can source specific materials if necessary, please email us about your specific job to request.

What are your laser cutters bed sizes?
Large Machine: 1200mm x 880mm
Small Machine: 900mm x 570mm
Materials and file sizes should not exceed these sizes.

Can you cut metal?
No sorry. Our premise is not big enough for large machinery capable of cutting metal at this stage. We can however mill certain metals on our CNC milling machine , feel free to check out our CNC milling service here.

What type of materials can you cut?
We can cut paper, cardboard, corrugated cardboard, acrylic perspex, MDF, LDF, interior plywood, solid wood, pine, veneers, balsa wood, fabric, leather, foam board and corflute.

Some specific materials contain chemical compounds that are released as extremely toxic gases when cut, such as chlorine gas. We reserve the right to refuse cutting of such materials as they are not only harmful to our team but also to yourself. We are open to trying other materials so if you are unsure if we can cut your material please research it or contact us to confirm.

What thickness can you cut?
We can cut materials between .01mm - 9mm of thickness. We are able to cut some specific materials with thicknesses of 9mm - 20mm. Note that the thicker your materials the more likely the cut will be slanted due to the nature of laser cutting. Please contact us if you are unsure what thickness we can cut in your material.

Do you have extended hours And 24 hour service?

Can I make a booking?
We do not take bookings, so just call before you come in or email us to check the turn around time. During our busy times when we have a queue you can reserve your space in the queue by either bringing in your materials (and emailing your file later) or emailing your file (and bringing in your materials later).
